James Parsons Obituary

Funeral Time: February 5th, 2014 James (Jim) Samuel Parsons, 91, died January 31, 2014. Born on his family's farm on Herrington Lake in Garrad County to the late Elmer and Myrtle Parsons, he is proceeded in death by two brothers, Maurice Parsons and Ralph Parsons, and a sister, Mary Louise Duggins. Survivors include his sister Doris Stephenson of Nicholasville, son Tim Parsons (Christine) and daughter Leslye Leonard (Matt Goulden), both of Lexington; as well as three grand children, four great grand children; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Parsons was a graduate of Buena Vista High School in Garrad County. He attended the University of Kentucky prior to enlisting in the Navy in 1943. While in the Navy he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters (Radarman 1st Class). Following the war he became active in the restaurant business working for Canteen Corporation and AMF Corporation's Mustang Restaurant in Lexington. He later was employed as the purchasing agent for the Continental Inn and Campbell House Inn from which he retired. Mr. Parsons was an active member of the Kentucky Restaurant Association. He served three different terms as the Bluegrass Chapter President and had served as a Director on the State Board of that Association since 1973. In 1990 he was made a Lifetime Director of the Association. He was one of the original organizers of the Taste of the Bluegrass which began in 1980 and served on that event's committee for many years. He was also a former member of the Bluegrass Kiwanis Club. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home - Harrodsburg Road. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by Rev. Brad Stephenson and Rev. Greg McClellan followed by burial at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery with a military service. Honorary pallbearers: Lyall Sears, Douglas Long, Bill Ellison, Obie Spicer, Pat Prather, Shirley Cox and Janet Jones. Contributions are suggested to the American Legion, Post 8, 1230 Man O War Place, Lexington, 40504. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home - Harrodsburg Road. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by Rev. Brad Stephenson and Rev. Greg McClellan followed by burial at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery with a military service.
