ROBERT HURLBUT MUSCATINE, Iowa - Robert D. Hurlbut, 78, of Muscatine, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2015, at First Baptist Church. Reverend Don Swanson will officiate. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church. Robert was born on October 12, 1936, in Muscatine, the son of Paul J. and Elma Mae Ruckles Hurlbut. He married Norma Hill on April 7, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was a member of the US Navy Reserves. He had worked at HJ Heinz Company for 40 years before retiring. Robert was a member of the First Baptist Church and sang in the church choir. He also served as a Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed playing the guitar, loved to tinker, and enjoyed making apple cider. He also enjoyed watching birds, gardening, and traveling. Whenever family or friends needed something to work right, they called Robert. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Norma Hurlbut of Muscatine; two sons, Thomas Hurlbut and David Hurlbut and wife, Nancy, all of Muscatine; two daughters, Sarah Johnson and husband, Dwayne, of Davenport, and Alyssa Raverty of Muscatine; 11 grandchildren, Ben, Joe, Mary, Jill, Jamie, Jacob, Stephanie, Tiffanie, Brittanie, Tiffany, and James; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Hurlbut and wife, Johannah, of Muscatine; and two sisters-in-law, Kay Hill and Lucille Hurlbut, both of Muscatine. He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Allen, Charles, Gayle, Merle, Wildon, and Paul; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Hill.
