Funeral Time: June 8th, 2018 Sam Zolondek Haviland died May 29, 2018 in Seattle, Washington after a courageous battle against cancer. Born July 30, 1958 in White Plains, New York, Sam grew up in Lexington, Kentucky. He graduated from Tates Creek High School, where he played on the football team. Sam graduated from Dartmouth College in 1980 (cum laude). He received his J.D. degree from Northwestern University School of Law in 1984. He acquired an LL.M in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1992. Sam, a longtime Seattle resident, was a partner in the Seattle office of the law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. A member of Orrick's global Corporate Group, Sam engaged in mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions. He represented United States and foreign companies, notably Microsoft. Sam enjoyed the complexities and challenges of the legal profession, particularly strategic planning and negotiations. Throughout his legal career, Sam was a team player for his law firms and a strong advocate for his institutional clients. Sam incarnated a wide array of virtues. These include love, kindness, generosity, honor, integrity, and loyalty. Sam was devoted to his family and an army of diverse friends. A Roman Catholic, Sam was an active member of Seattle's St. James Cathedral. His lifetime displays extensive good deeds on behalf of individuals and organizations. Sam performed charitable work on behalf of Seattle's Community Lunch on Capitol Hill and for many other causes. Sam's widespread interests included military history (he was a genuine scholar in the field), particularly that of the American Civil War and the Napoleonic Wars. He greatly enjoyed sports, particularly professional football and especially the Seattle Seahawks. Sam is survived by his mother Ann Faile Zolondek and his brothers Leo Haviland (Nicole) and Max Haviland (Maureen). He also is survived by his nephews Macsen and Samuel and his nieces Emma and Martha. Sam's cousins Clyde Topping, Billy Siebert, Elizabeth Siebert, and Kathy Siebert King also survive him, as does his uncle Samuel Faile. Sam's sister Sara Ann Zolondek and his father Leon Zolondek predeceased him. Funeral services for Sam will be held on Friday June 8, 2018 at 2:00pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 East Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky. Visitation also is on June 8, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Kerr Brothers. Sam's burial that day will be in Lexington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish to make donations in Sam's memory, consider Seattle's Community Lunch on Capitol Hill and Seattle's St. James Cathedral, as well as The Hope Center, a community service organization in Lexington. Funeral services for Sam will be held on Friday June 8, 2018 at 2:00pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 East Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky.
